One of the most difficult aspects of being your own boss is holding firm to the self-imposed self-discipline it takes to get the job done every day. The more productive you are, the better your business bottom line so how to keep alert, effective and energized when you know, if you wanted to you could just go back to bed?

Yes, in a day so overwhelmingly, full of countless distractions, deadlines and demands, you need specific personal strategies to stay on track with what you want to accomplish. Create to-do lists that get you started immediately on crucial tasks instead of idly scrolling through your emails.

In fact, turn off your email notifications so you can’t be teased by that tantalizing little ping tempting you to check out what just came in. Minimize other distractions as well and impose your own deadlines on each “to do list” item so you don’t allow yourself the luxury of procrastination.

By the same token, schedule your own little rest breaks where you can get up, move around, clear out the mental cobwebs and re-focus your concentration. Steve Olenski recommends implementing his “two-minute rule” to make the most of even the tiniest pockets of time. According to this successful entrepreneur, immediately completing tasks that take a maximum of two minutes or less is actually more efficient than postponing them until later.

The key is to become positively self-centered in a productive business sense, rather than dancing to the tune of everyone else’s agenda.

It really should be all about YOU!
