A bad bookkeeper will never have any answers for you when asked. Always 'getting back to you' or madly putting things together before having an answer

A good bookkeeper provides your monthly reports to you without being asked and the reports make sense.

A bad bookkeeper always needs to be prodded for financials and will likely have a substantial amount of items in a suspense or clearing account.
